What a self storage box is and what it is for

A self storage box is a closed compartment, in a building with CCTV, that you rent by the month to keep your belongings. Only you access your box, and you pay only for the space you use. The full explanation is in what is self storage.

It is used to store furniture and boxes during a move or building work, to free up space in a small home or to keep seasonal items. Businesses use it for archives, stock or equipment. See examples in when to use self storage.

Where self storage exists in Portugal

Self storage is concentrated mainly in the large urban areas, especially Greater Lisbon and Greater Porto. It also exists in other cities, but in smaller numbers and with less choice of locations and sizes. Cities are where the lack of space is felt most:

• Smaller homes. Urban flats rarely have a storeroom, loft or garage.
• Moving house. Between leaving one home and moving into the next there are often weeks when furniture has to be stored.
• Renting. Tenants move more often, rent furnished flats or share a home.
• E-commerce and small businesses. Those without their own warehouse keep stock and archives close to their customers.

If you live outside Lisbon: the nearest unit

We have no units in Cascais, Sintra, Amadora, Odivelas, Loures, Costa da Caparica, Setúbal or the town of Oeiras (Algés is in the municipality of Oeiras, next to Lisbon). Approximate distances, by car without traffic:

How much a self storage box costs

The monthly price depends mainly on the size and the unit:

How to compare self storage operators

Ask every company the same questions:

1. Location and access. Is it close to home or work? What are the access hours and how do you get in (code, card, key)?
2. Security. Is there CCTV? Is insurance included and what is the limit? Above it, do you need additional insurance?
3. Contract. Minimum term, notice to leave, penalties, deposit and entry fees.
4. Final price. Does it include VAT or is it exempt? What is included?
5. Sizes. Are there several, and can you switch box if needed?
6. Booking and support. Can you book online? When does the team answer?
